What is cancer?

Cancer is a term that refers to more than 200 distinct diseases, including colon, breast, prostate, brain, and lung cancer. Cancer impacts every patient differently, depending on its type, location, spread and the individual circumstances of the patient.

Cancer originates when abnormal cells divide and grow out of control and crowd out normal cells. Some cancers may invade other tissues.  Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. It is not just one single disease but many different diseases that can start in the colon, breasts, lungs, or even the blood. Although all cancers are alike in some ways, they are different in the ways they grow and spread.

The National Cancer Institute has created a detailed A-Z list of cancers that can be found HERE.

There are three standard types of treatments that have been the primary tools in fighting cancer for years: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. There are also a growing number of more commonly used treatments showing great impact including hormonal therapies, immunotherapies, and targeted drug therapies.

Any individual cancer may require one method of treatment or respond better to a combination of two or more treatments. Each treatment plan is created for the individual patient based on their unique circumstances.
