Having trouble staying hydrated during your cancer treatment? You’re not alone!

Why do 8 glasses of water seem so unattainable, but 8 cups of coffee or pop seem so easy? Water makes up 60% of our body and benefits our bodies in many ways:

  • Removes waste

  • Equalizes your temperature

  • Lubricates and cushions joints

  • Protects sensitive tissue

As important it is to stay hydrated when you’re well, it’s even more important to stay hydrated during your cancer treatments. Some treatments and medications can increase the likelihood of dehydration and not knowing the signs could put you in the hospital.

Symptoms of dehydration can include:

To hopefully avoid these symptoms, a good rule of thumb is to drink at least 8 cups of water a day. However, everyone’s needs are different, your cancer treatment may affect how much water you need. It’s important to consult your doctor if you have specific questions on your hydration needs.

We know for some that drinking water is hard, especially if you are having a metallic taste because of your chemotherapy treatments. Try mixing it up! You can add fresh ginger, cinnamon, mint, cucumber, berries and so much more to your water for a natural way to flavor it. You can also add sparkling water, smoothies, juice, tea and other options to reach your water intake needs. You can also add electrolytes to your hydration plan by adding drinks like coconut water or bottled water with added electrolytes.

Some basic tips you can add into your daily routine to stay hydrated include:

  • Start when you wake up. You just woke up from a long sleep and your body will need some rehydrating. Kick your day off right with a glass of water.

  • Keep a reusable water bottle. Having a water bottle on you at all times allows you to sip throughout the day to help reach your water goal.

  • Create a routine. Develop a schedule on how much water you should drink and by what time of the day.

  • Track your progress. Use a free app, a high-tech water bottle, phone reminders or simply write on a reusable water bottle. This will help keep you accountable throughout the day.

  • Use a filter. Filters can improve the taste of tap water. Look into a filter pitcher faucet or reusable water bottle to add to your routine.
