What is hematology?
Hematology, or blood disorders, affects the blood’s main components – white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Hematologists are the physicians who treat these disorders. Blood cells continuously die as our bodies generate new ones. Platelets live six days, red blood cells live about 120 days, and white cells live less than one day.
There are many types of blood disorders, including bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, bone marrow disorders, hemophilia and other clotting disorders, and anemia. There are also several cancers of the blood, including leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma.
